IBRA: Sustainable construction, innovative housing and smart city planning took centre stage at an Urban October event that opened in North Al Sharqiyah Governorate on Monday, bringing together government bodies, property developers, investors and academics.

Organised by the governorate’s Directorate General of Housing and Urban Planning in cooperation with A’Sharqiyah University, the event aims to strengthen coordination between institutions and the community and explore approaches to sustainable urban development.

Mahmoud bin Yahya al Dhuhli, Governor of North Al Sharqiyah, presided over the opening.

Discussions focused on policies and strategies for developing smart, sustainable cities in line with Oman Vision 2040 and the global urban development agenda. The programme also examined innovative housing solutions designed to meet the needs of different sections of society and improve quality of life.

The event showcased construction technologies, engineering innovations and environmentally friendly building materials, alongside green and smart architecture that can improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions.

It also provided a platform for government agencies, property developers, investment companies and specialists to exchange expertise and explore partnerships.

Another focus was raising public awareness of the role of sound urban planning in addressing future challenges, improving the urban environment and enhancing living standards.

Young people and academics were encouraged to contribute ideas and proposals for the future development of the governorate.

The event forms part of the Urban October initiatives promoting sustainable urban development and planning solutions that respond to community needs. The initiatives also emphasise preserving historical and architectural heritage and incorporating it into development.

Al Dhuhli also opened an accompanying exhibition featuring public and private sector organisations, alongside student projects from higher education institutions in the governorate. — ONA
